Forming one part of the Nordkettenbahn, Hungerburgbahn will take you soaring from the city centre to the foot of Nordkette mountains in just a few minutes. Enjoy picturesque views as you start at ground level, going all the way up to almost 2300m above sea level.

The outstanding architecture and technology of Hungerburg Innsbruck have led it to become an important landmark in the city. It was even shortlisted for the Stirling Prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Whether it’s summer or winter, you can gear up for some unforgettable views of the beautiful slopes of Nordkette Mountain. You can even take the funicular to the nearby attractions, the most famous of which is Alpine Zoo.

In 2005, architect Zaha Hadid, along with the contractor Strabag, won the competition to build Hungerburg Funicular. This was Hadid’s second project in Innsbruck after The Bergisel Ski Jump, built in 2002.

Known for their outstanding architecture, the Hungerburgbahn stations were the largest structure in the world to utilise double-curved glass. One of its most striking features is the “floating” ceiling, which mimics natural ice formations to represent the Alpine nature of Innsbruck, while also reflecting the passengers below.

There are four stations on the Hungerburg funicular — Congress Station, Loewenhaus, Alpenzoo, and Hungerburg. Congress Station is located in Innsbruck, Loewenhaus is an intermediate station, Alpenzoo is the station to reach if you want to check out the Alpine Zoo, and the last station is the one that will connect you with Nordkette.
