About The Gundolf Family

Pre-Tyrolean Folk Show

The Tyrolean Folk Show’s history is recent, but the foundations were laid back in the 18th century. Mountain farmer and passionate musician Franz Gundolf founded the first village brass band in Häselgehr in the Lech Valley/Tyrol in 1773, kickstarting a legacy that lives on today.

The Grandson

Franz’s grandson, Franz Paulo Gundolf, was born in 1869. He taught music to finance his studies during the day and performed in the guesthouse “Breinössl” in Innsbruck in the evening. He had eight children, each gifted with musical talent.

A Band Took Shape

Franz Paulo’s son Kurt built a music career. He was a bell founder and soloist on the Flügelhorn with the Innsbruck city brass band “Wiltener Stadtkapelle” for 25 years. He and his brothers Otto, Erich and Oskar formed the Gundolf band in 1950 and performed across Europe.

The Birth of the Tyrolean Folk Show

Kurt’s sons Franz, Konrad and Ernst formed the “Alpenbühne Geschwister Gundolf.” They performed with their father Kurt and sisters Fini and Edith as a family ensemble at the historical “Stiftskeller” in Innsbruck. Many singers, musicians, and dancers joined after the group’s success.

Post Foundation

The Gundolf Family’s reputation skyrocketed after their show’s foundation. Post-1967, they performed worldwide, taking Tyrolean musicians to all corners. They toured Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Holland, Sweden, and Denmark, followed by South Africa, the USA, Canada, and Japan.
